Dr. Lawrence Grunfeld, Infertility Specialist at RMA of New York, discusses Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis and Screening. Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is an advanced genetic technique that allows an individual embryo to be analyzed. PGD is a recommended procedure for patients who are affected by a genetic condition or are carriers of a genetic anomaly and are at risk of passing the anomaly on to their offspring. Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), on the other hand, may be used when patients do not have a known genetic disorder, but are experiencing infertility related to recurrent miscarriage or unsuccessful IVF cycles. PGD technology used with in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment can improve the likelihood of a successful and healthy pregnancy.
Dr. Jeff Klein, Infertility Specialist at RMA of New York, discusses infertility, advanced maternal age and getting pregnant after age 35. Dr. Klein reviews how age affects fertility, testing to measure ovarian reserve, as well as things to consider when undergoing fertility treatment, such as desired family size.
Dr. Georgia Witkin, Clinical Psychologist at RMA of New York fertility center, discusses Egg Donation, also known as Ovum Donation or Donor Egg IVF. Egg donation is a fertility treatment option for women and couples interested in conceiving with the use of donor eggs. It can be an option for women whose own eggs are unable to achieve a pregnancy due to advanced reproductive age, genetic abnormalities, previous surgeries and/or other conditions. Dr. Witkin dispels the myths and explains the facts about egg donation and using donor eggs to become pregnant.

Dr. Bar-Chama explains that an initial workup typically includes a semen analysis and an overview of the man’s medical history. Dara Godfrey, MS RD, Nutritionist at RMA of New York, discusses how she supports patients’ nutritional goals before, during, and after fertility treatment. Infertility specialists may also recommend that patients with some medical conditions, such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), seek nutritional counseling prior to starting treatment. Dara recommends that both male and female patients reduce alcohol and caffeine consumption when trying to conceive. She stresses the importance of incorporating a variety of foods in one’s diet, including fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, as well as lots of water. Dara recommends including one source of full fat dairy products a day. She advises patients to choose fish sources that are low in mercury. She also highly recommends taking prenatal vitamins when trying to conceive.
Dr. Benjamin Sandler, Infertility Specialist at RMA of New York, discusses miscarriage and recurrent pregnancy loss. Dr. Sandler describes the patient evaluation process as well as available treatment options. An Infertility Specialist will evaluate the patient’s uterus to rule out a uterine factor or uterine congenital anomalies. This can be performed by taking an x-ray (such as a hysterosalpingogram (HSG)) or by performing a saline sonogram. Dr. Sandler also describes how genetic abnormalities can cause miscarriage. In these cases, in vitro fertilization (IVF) with pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) may be a viable treatment option. Dr. Sandler explains how recurrent pregnancy loss can be overcome with treatments that address uterine factors, genetic issues, endocrine issues and/or autoimmune diseases.

Patients going through infertility treatments can feel overwhelmed, stressed and may experience a sense of lack of control. Patients have control over the doctors they see and the clinic they go to; they may also choose to see a therapist for counseling or join a support group. Ms. Schuman suggests patients can also experience immediate stress reduction by having acupuncture and massage treatments and by exercising.
