PGD is a recommended procedure for patients who are affected by a genetic condition or are carriers of a genetic anomaly and are at risk of passing the anomaly on to their offspring. Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), on the other hand, may be used when patients do not have a known genetic disorder, but are experiencing infertility related to recurrent miscarriage or unsuccessful IVF cycles. PGD technology used with in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment can improve the likelihood of a successful and healthy pregnancy.

Infertility specialists may also recommend that patients with some medical conditions, such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), seek nutritional counseling prior to starting treatment. Dara recommends that both male and female patients reduce alcohol and caffeine consumption when trying to conceive. She stresses the importance of incorporating a variety of foods in one’s diet, including fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, as well as lots of water. Dara recommends including one source of full fat dairy products a day. She advises patients to choose fish sources that are low in mercury. She also highly recommends taking prenatal vitamins when trying to conceive.
